As the latest addition to the Bodog Poker Pro Team, Evelyn represents the skill and lifestyle that infuses all things Bodog.
Recently BodogNation had a chance to sit down with Evelyn and get to know her a little better.
Bodog Nation: What do you do to keep your cool when the pressure is on?
Evelyn NG: I find that listening to my iPod on a low level allows me to stay relaxed, and still able to focus on the game. It keeps me from getting distracted or talking too much, and elevates my mood as well.
BN: How important are tells to the way you play your game?
EN: Tells are extremely important for me, because once you know the basic poker math, you have to learn how to get information out of observing your opponents behavior. And, should you discover a revealing tell on an opponent, it could prove to be very rewarding.
BN: What do you do to pick yourself up after a bad beat?
EN: I never allow myself to stew over any particularly tough beat. I have been in the game long enough that I've probably taken every kind of sick beat possible, so I just remind myself that it's part of the game. Now, if I were to make a really bad play, that I might not find so easy to recover from.
BN: Are there any advantages or disadvantages to being a woman playing poker?
EN: There are so many advantages for women playing poker. First of all, males tend to underestimate us right out of the gate. Secondly, men are not used to or expecting to find themselves facing off against a woman in a competitive nature, and may find it difficult to play their best game. And the best is beating the pants off the real macho types. There's nothing more fun! I haven't come across any disadvantages yet.
BN: When did you decide that you wanted to make your living as a poker player?
EN: For my twenty-first birthday, Daniel Negreanu brought me to Las Vegas. It was the first time I had met real professional poker players who made their entire living from poker. It opened up my eyes to the fact that I could probably do it as well.
BN: What's the best part about being a member of Team Bodog?
EN: The best part about Bodog is the people who make up the whole Bodog experience. From the great people that I get to work with, the online community of its players, and the celebrities and cool people at Bodog's events and parties. It's wonderful to be surrounded by hip, positive people.
BN: As this year's WSOP nears, are you doing any strategizing in preparation?
EN: I'm planning on playing as many events as I can, but still pacing myself so I don’t burn out. I'm prepared to have zero social life for the entire duration, and I’ll be sticking to a tough schedule of sleep and massages.
You’ll be able to watch Ng this Saturday at 11 p.m. in the fifth episode of Calvin Ayre Wild Card Poker series on a major US network. Check your local listings for the channel in your area.
